Electricity pylon Twist (Viäntö)

Viäntö-niminen maisemapylväs loistaa valaistuksessaan pimeällä.

The task was to design an electricity pylon that would bring the Savilahti landscape an industrial design element that would stand out from the cityscape. The design has been inspired by the themes attributed to the area in the Circle of Light: ‘science’ and ‘values and culture’.

The design process has been guided by the location of the pylon in the “roundabout” of three separate electrical cable routes as well as the aim to create a structurally logical and architecturally distinctive work of art that would offer the viewer various possibilities for interpretation.

Twist is first and foremost a redesign of the traditional pylon. Twist combines the transmission of electricity with creativity, but what is most fascinating about it is its ambiguity. The Finnish name of the pylon, Viäntö, describes the threaded form of the pylon, which resembles the structure of human DNA, while slightly hinting at the specific state of mind traditionally attributed to the people of Savo.

The pylon is fitted with a dynamic special lighting element, which helps the pylon to stand out and has pre-programmed settings for holidays and special occasions. The lighting has been designed by Mikko Pekonen from Ramboll Finland Oy.
